Generator cooler - – windings cooler - Motor cooler– - Alternator cooler– - Stator cooler

Generator coolers are heat exchangers by another name. The purpose is to remove heat energy from the rotating machinery that generates electricity, into a cooling medium. For Vestas aircoil, this is always cool water. The product is sometimes also referred to as a “motor windings coolers” or a “generator windings coolers”.

In simple terms, the heat energy transfers from the hot air surrounding the rotating machinery in the generator housing, through the fins and tubes of the air cooler, and into the cool water inside the tubes.

Without removing the heat energy, the whole generator would become too hot to work efficiently.

The version of generator air cooler associated with Vestas aircoil is commonly known as a “TEWAC” unit, standing for: “Totally Enclosed Water (to) Air Cooled”.

Each generator application will have a different “heat exchanger duty”, commonly measured in kilowatts (kW). The thermal design is a function of the heat energy to be removed combined with the availability and temperature of the cooling medium (water).

The finished units are normally cassette like. Positioned in the housing, above the generator and are capable of being removed without too much interference to the rotating components.

The generator itself looks a lot like an electric motor. (It is in fact the same thing, just used in reverse; turning to produce electricity instead of using electricity to turn). Thus, it is full of expensive copper and has a high value.

Since the air coolers often sit in the housing above the generator, and since they have water flowing through them; it is essential they never leak. Water coming into contact with the generator would be catastrophic. For this reason, Vestas uses a double wall tube technology where called for.(See below).

Generator "windings" coolers with optional DOUBLE WALL LEAKAGE DETECTION

It is essential that water never leaks into the motor windings of a generator cooler.

We use a double tube wall solution in many of our generator coolers - or motor coolers and stator air coolers as they also are called. If there is a problem, water leaks to a special pathway between outer and inner tubes and then to a void at the tube plates. After that, water leaks to the outside, thus warning the chief engineer there is a problem whilst not endangering the windings. This is the reason for the common name "leak detector tubes".

BENEFITS of Vestas aircoil generator cooler:
We have developed a production process that combines all of the same features but with more efficient "plate" fins. The result is reduced cost with increased thermal performance.

Vestas aircoil supplies these coolers to both the OEM market and also as an aftermarket replacement.

Available in a number of different material combinations to suit your needs, including copper or aluminium fins and a variety of ferrous and non-ferrous tubes.
